Here comes the judge
Last week, we called Jane Wiedlin, a member of
the Go-Go's, and asked her what sort of criteria she
and bandmate Gina Schock would use as celebrity
judges at the Trannyshack vs. Club Gossip Go-Go's
lip-sync contest over Memorial Day weekend.
It turns out technical proficiency isn't as important
as wearing the biggest wig. "You don't have to
get the words right," Wiedlin said. "It's going to be
more about the outfits and being outrageous."
Any other pointers? "Everyone that comes dressed
as me automatically wins," she said. "Unless they
do my poodle perm hairdo from the '80s."
Competitors will have plenty of material to choose
from, including the all-girl group's seminal
new wave hits "Vacation," "We Got the Beat"
and "Our Lips Are Sealed," most recently covered
by tween queens Hilary and Haylie Duff. There's even
a chance Wiedlin will jump onstage. "Maybe I could do
a brief lesson on how to dance like us," Wiedlin said.
"I can do the Belinda dance really well. You just need
to know how to wave your arms above your head."
This isn't the first time Wiedlin, also a cast member
on VH1's "The Surreal Life," has presided over a
Trannyshack event. Three years ago she sat in on
the nightclub's beauty pageant. "I love drag queens,"
she said. "I adore Heklina, who runs the club."
The Go-Go's are collaborating with Disney on a
project called the Po-Go's, which features children
performing old and new material by the band.
"I know there are plenty of women in their 30s
that would love to listen to those songs with their kids,"
Wiedlin said. She is also working on a musical
she hopes to take to Broadway.
The Go-Go's lip-sync contest takes place at
Club Gossip vs. Trannyshack, 9 p.m. May 27
at the Cat Club, 1190 Folsom St., San Francisco.
